The story is set in 1940 in a small, fictional town in Sicily during World War II. It is told through the eyes of Renato Amoroso, a 13-year-old boy who becomes utterly obsessed with Malèna Scordia, the most beautiful woman in town.
Malèna's husband is away fighting in the war, leaving her alone. Because of her breathtaking beauty, she becomes the ultimate object of desire for the local men and a target of intense jealousy, gossip, and hatred for the local women. As the war progresses and Malèna faces tragic hardships, the town's obsession with her takes a dark, cruel turn, while Renato can only watch helplessly from afar.
